Even if the storyline took another route, it was destined to be a tragedy - as Nabokov believed all such relationships inherently were. I would love to have some gorgeous moppet attach herself to me - and I have no doubt that it would be very intense, very brief, and would end tragically - the direct opposite of what I fantasize. If by some chance I had arrived in the same position as Clyde at the end of the story, I'd have run myself through with the knife and died holding her in my arms. No rescue squad, no trial. If I wrote a journal first, though, I'd probably need more than fifteen minutes to write something that would take six hours to read! anonymous 2010-08-21 03:29:24: Little girls shouldn't die like that, but they do. |
